The View Sparks Debate on DEI Initiatives

In a lively exchange on the latest “Hot Topic” segment of The View, cohost Sunny Hostin found herself at odds with her fellow panelists as they delved into the comments made by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.

Buttigieg had recently criticized some DEI training practices, likening them to “something out of Portlandia.” While many on the panel expressed support for his perspective, Hostin firmly disagreed. “I like Pete, of course, but I think he got that so wrong, and I think it was so tone-deaf,” she remarked, highlighting the historical context of systemic inequality in America. Hostin emphasized that from 1776 until 1965, leadership has predominantly been held by white men, leaving women and people of color marginalized in the push for equality.

Drawing from a McKinsey & Company report, Hostin pointed out that diverse companies not only perform better financially but also create a more inclusive environment. She posed critical questions about the effectiveness of simply dismantling DEI programs in favor of an unregulated hiring process, questioning if relying on the goodwill of high-profile billionaires would yield meaningful change.

Cohost Sara Haines offered a nuanced view, arguing that Buttigieg’s critique might be more about the execution of DEI practices rather than their intention. “I think that in this era, there’s been almost this DEI industrial complex,” Haines stated, noting a trend where organizations hire consultants to create a facade of diversity through superficial measures like seminars without fostering genuine inclusivity.

Ana Navarro steered the discussion towards broader Democratic strategies, pointing out that the party risks focusing too heavily on self-criticism when they should capitalize on the divisive actions of Donald Trump. “I don’t understand why every Democratic strategist isn’t laser-focused on showcasing the suffering and cruelty that Donald Trump has brought upon the American public,” she noted.

Haines brought the focus back to DEI by playing a clip from the event Buttigieg referenced, expressing concern that the essence of diversity initiatives may be lost amidst these controversies. She argued that some organizations improperly implement DEI by staging “sham” diversity interviews, a practice that undermines true inclusivity.

When Hostin challenged this approach, insisting that it implies a lack of qualifications for candidates, Haines clarified that in such cases, actual job positions did not exist, complicating the idea of equitable opportunity. Haines proposed blind hiring as a potential solution to correcting biases in hiring practices, but Alyssa Farah Griffin countered that this methodology could conflict with DEI’s goals.

Hostin defended DEI initiatives by asserting that these programs strive to ensure traditionally excluded groups have equal access to opportunities, emphasizing the high qualifications of individuals in these programs.

The discussion culminated with Navarro affirming the consequences of diminished DEI efforts, citing the potential decline in representation among people of color within corporate leadership under current political dynamics. Hostin and Navarro acknowledged their shared experiences as women of color, with Navarro effectively summarizing, “we’re going to see if there are less people of color, or more,” in leadership roles moving forward. Hostin agreed, reinforcing the importance of advocacy for racial equity in professional spaces.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
