Mere hours after Suzanne Collins revealed her upcoming prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate promptly announced plans for a film adaptation. The original series, which follows teenagers forced to fight to the death in a dystopian society, significantly impacted the young adult dystopian genre.
Since the release of Sunrise on the Reaping, focusing on the youth of Katniss’s mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, fans have eagerly awaited details regarding the film’s cast, release date, and storyline—especially following the success of last year’s prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. At last, we are beginning to receive essential updates on the film adaptation. Here’s what we know so far about Sunrise on the Reaping.
When Will ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ Be Released?
Lionsgate has officially set the release date for Sunrise on the Reaping as November 20, 2026. While film release dates can often change, the studio’s confidence in their schedule gives hope that fans can look forward to this film as planned.
What Will ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ Be About?
The narrative of Sunrise on the Reaping takes place 24 years prior to the events of Katniss’s reaping in the original series, and 40 years after Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. At the center of the story is a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy from District 12, who tragically finds himself selected for the 50th Hunger Games. This edition, known as a “Quarter Quell,” features double the tributes from each district, increasing the participants from 24 to 48.
The film will explore Haymitch’s journey through this harrowing experience and his first encounters with the intricate politics of Panem. He leaves behind a girlfriend from District 12, Lenore Dove Baird, sparking fan theories about her connection to Lucy Gray Baird from the previous prequel. Given that Haymitch becomes the victor of his games, this adaptation offers a unique opportunity to witness his transformation into the disillusioned character known from the original series.
Who Will Be in ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’?
The romantic leads in Sunrise on the Reaping will be played by two relatively new actors. Joseph Zada, known for his role in Total Control, is set to portray Haymitch Abernathy, while Whitney Peak from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will take on the role of Lenore Dove Baird.
In addition to these lead roles, Lionsgate has announced that Jesse Plemons, from Power of the Dog, will portray a younger version of Plutarch Heavensbee, previously played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Furthermore, McKenna Grace from I, Tonya will join the cast as Maysilee Donner, another tribute from District 12. Other casting details are yet to be disclosed.
Who Else Will Be Involved?
Returning to direct is Francis Lawrence, who helmed several previous installments of the Hunger Games series. The screenplay will be adapted by Billy Ray, known for his work on the initial film. While there’s still much to learn about the rest of the cast and crew, the involvement of these prominent names reassures fans that Sunrise on the Reaping will maintain the essence of its predecessors.
Sunrise on the Reaping is already available in bookstores, with a theatrical release set for November 20, 2026.
