Sushmita Sen Reflects on Challenging Times After Winning Miss Universe
Sushmita Sen, who made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title in 1994, has opened up about her journey and the demanding work ethic instilled in her at a young age. During a recent discussion on Shipra Neeraj’s YouTube channel, she shared her experiences following her crowning at just 18 years old.
Commitment and Resilience
In her conversation, Sen emphasized the importance of honoring work commitments, no matter the personal challenges one faces. She recounted a lesson learned soon after her victory: “I was taught that even with a fever, a cold, or a fractured leg, there would be doctors on call, ensuring that I would never say no to work. The expectation was always to fulfill our commitments, regardless of the circumstances,” Sen reflected.
Health Struggles in the Spotlight
Sen revealed that her early journey as Miss Universe was not without its difficulties. While she was in the United States after winning the title, she faced significant health challenges, including chickenpox and malaria. Despite these setbacks, she maintained her work schedule. “Imagine dealing with chickenpox when you’re just starting your journey as Miss Universe! It was incredibly challenging, but I learned that pushing through was possible,” she recalled.
At one point, Sen described enduring a high fever due to malaria while continuing to go to work daily. “I had a 104-degree fever and dealt with every possible health issue that one could encounter, yet I showed up. This experience taught me the value of resilience,” she stated.
