Increased Burglary Attempts During Palisades Fire Emergency

The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has unveiled the identities of nearly a dozen attempted burglary suspects arrested within the evacuation zones of the Palisades Fire in Santa Monica. Officials stated that none of these individuals reside in the city.

According to authorities, six out of the ten suspects were found in possession of “burglary tools.” It has been confirmed that all suspects had traveled from outside Santa Monica to reach the disaster area.

SMPD disclosed that a total of 39 arrests have been made since the outbreak of the Palisades Fire, with charges often varying from attempted burglary to curfew and drug possession violations, as well as warrants and parole breaches.

Details on Arrested Suspects

Among those apprehended, four individuals—including Joshua Kaliel Love, Miguel Angel Dorantes, Gabriel Asaih Stokes, and Dominic Pachecomanga—have been specifically charged with burglary within the evacuation zones. Notably, all individuals arrested so far are from outside Santa Monica.

Police reports indicated that Joshua Kaliel Love, 29, attempted to flee from officers but was apprehended with a dagger, a window-breaking tool, gloves, a mask, and narcotics. At the time of his arrest, he was on probation.

Unusual Behavior Raises Suspicion

In another incident, suspects Dominic Pachecomanga, 18, and Miguel Angel Dorantes, 22, were found traveling in a van lacking identification. Upon investigation, officers discovered gloves, burglary tools, dark clothing, and ski masks in their possession. Interestingly, they had the Watch Duty app open on their devices, an application designed to monitor fire and evacuation zones, prompting further suspicion among law enforcement.

Another individual, Gabriel Isiah Stokes, 27, was stopped after his vehicle was flagged as stolen. Authorities found a stolen California ID along with additional fake identification, burglary tools, and disguising attire including a black beanie and ski mask.

Background on the Situation

The ongoing Palisades Fire has prompted significant evacuations in the Los Angeles area, creating opportunities for ill-intentioned individuals. As communities grapple with the devastation caused, the increased presence of would-be looters has raised alarm among residents and officials alike.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance in such critical times, encouraging residents to report any suspicious activities as recovery efforts unfold.
