New Hunger Games Novel Shatters Sales Records
The latest installment in the immensely popular Hunger Games franchise is already making waves in the literary world just one week after its release. Sunrise on the Reaping, penned by Suzanne Collins, has quickly climbed to the top of bestseller lists, setting impressive sales benchmarks.
In its debut week, the novel sold an astonishing 1.2 million copies in the United States, across various formats, according to its publisher, Scholastic. Approximately 715,000 of those sales came from print copies, as reported by Circana BookScan, showcasing a remarkable gap between Sunrise and the second-place title of the week, The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins, which sold roughly 71,000 copies.
As of now, Sunrise on the Reaping is ranked as the third bestselling book of the year in the U.S., trailing behind Mel Robbins’s work, which has sold about 872,000 copies this year. The debut of Collins’ latest novel marks the second largest opening of the year, following the deluxe edition of Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, which continues to hold its status as the overall top seller, having moved approximately 1.8 million units across both its deluxe and standard formats.
“Sales for Sunrise on the Reaping have exceeded all expectations,” stated Ellie Berger, the Executive Vice President and President of Scholastic Trade. Scholastic highlighted that the new title has achieved remarkable success by topping charts not just in the U.S., but also in the U.K., Canada, Ireland, and Australia. In fact, its first-week sales outpaced those of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes released in 2020 by twofold, and surpassed Mockingjay‘s initial sales from 2010 by three times.
Critics have responded positively to the novel, with Publishers Weekly offering a starred review and describing it as “a brutal tale of compassion and rage, and a frank examination of propaganda and tragedy, that will satisfy longtime series fans and newcomers alike.” With the success of the book, an adaptation for the big screen is also in the works, scheduled to premiere in theaters in November 2026.
