Sydney Sweeney Responds to Body Shamers with Empowering Training Video

Sydney Sweeney took a stand against online body shamers on Friday by sharing an empowering video showcasing her rigorous training routine for her role in the upcoming biopic about Christy Martin.

The video was posted on Instagram and juxtaposed hurtful comments about her physique with dynamic footage of her hard work in the gym. The clip begins with a series of derogatory remarks, including one comment stating, “She looks very chunky,” and another suggesting she might be a candidate for weight management medication. However, the subsequent scenes depict Sweeney lifting tires, utilizing weights, and boxing, sending a clear message of defiance against body shaming.

In a prior interview with Glamour UK, Sweeney candidly discussed her journey with body image. “One of the questions I get is, ‘Are you a feminist?’ I find empowerment through embracing the body that I have. That’s sexy and strong, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it,” she shared. Referring to her experiences in the entertainment industry, she added, “Well, especially when it comes to red-carpet pics and they’re like, ‘Sydney Sweeney displays bust,’ or ‘Sydney Sweeney wears a scandalous dress,’ I’m like, ‘I’m wearing the exact same dress someone else would be wearing! I just have tits.’”

The as-yet-untitled film about Christy Martin also features actors including Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Chad L. Coleman.

The movie portrays the remarkable story of Christy Martin, who became a prominent figure as America’s top female boxer during the 1990s. According to the film’s official synopsis, “The film tells the unbelievable true story of formidable Christy Martin, who rose to fame as America’s most successful female boxer in the 1990s. A naturally gifted fighter, Christy’s life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and later husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King, and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.”

In October, Sweeney gave fans a glimpse into the making of the film with behind-the-scenes footage. “Well, the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes so here’s a little BTS from my film I’m working on right now,” she wrote on Instagram along with two candid photos. “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring.”

She continued, “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. More to come soon,” Sweeney concluded, hinting at the inspiring narrative that awaits audiences.
