In a recent press briefing in New York, Mr. Dujarric highlighted the persistent danger posed by explosive ordnance, noting that casualties continue to occur almost daily. This remains a significant concern, particularly for farmers and shepherds who are disproportionately affected by such hazards.
Since the beginning of the year, statistics reveal that over 60 individuals have lost their lives and more than 90 have sustained injuries while engaged in agricultural activities or tending to livestock.
Efforts to Clear Mines Expand
As conflicts have decreased in certain regions, humanitarian organizations are ramping up mine clearance initiatives in areas that have recently become accessible. Since December, a substantial effort has seen the safe disposal of over 1,400 pieces of unexploded ordnance and the identification of 138 minefields and contaminated sites across Idleb, Aleppo, Hama, Deir-ez-Zor, and Lattakia.
A notable visit on Monday involved UN partners exploring a farm in Darayya, Rural Damascus, which had undergone clearance operations supported by the Syria Humanitarian Fund. Such efforts are essential in facilitating safe agricultural practices, enabling farmers to confidently return to their land.
Continued Humanitarian Aid and Diplomatic Engagement
Simultaneously, humanitarian aid efforts remain robust and uninterrupted. Over the weekend, 40 trucks delivered nearly 1,000 metric tons of food assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP), entering northwest Syria through the Bab Al-Hawa border crossing. This shipment is poised to benefit over 270,000 individuals.
Additionally, the UN has augmented the importation of food and other forms of aid from Jordan since the start of the year, enhancing the support available to those in need.
On the diplomatic side, UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, is planning a visit to Damascus this week, following his participation in discussions at the Munich Security Conference. He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive, Syrian-led political dialogue and urged all stakeholders to adhere to their commitments regarding women’s rights.
Mr. Dujarric reinforced this message, calling on all involved parties in Syria to honor their international obligations, protect the rights and dignity of women, and guarantee their full involvement in determining the nation’s future. This includes ensuring access to education, safeguarding freedom of movement, promoting political representation, and providing protection against violence and exploitation.
