Taapsee Pannu Discusses the Reluctance of Actors to Express Political Views
In a recent interview with ANI, actress Taapsee Pannu addressed the complex relationship between celebrities and politics, exploring the reasons many in the film industry opt for silence on political issues despite holding strong personal beliefs.
Pannu articulated that the “politics” actors navigate extends beyond traditional political affiliations, revealing a deep-seated fear of backlash that influences their decision-making. She observed, “People want to stay quiet because they feel that way or this way there will be a problem.” This sentiment reflects the delicate balance actors must maintain in public discourse.
Known for her candid remarks on controversial topics like nepotism, Pannu highlighted the scrutiny actors, particularly women, face regarding their intellect and awareness of social matters. “Actors are believed to have low IQ and people think that they hardly know anything, especially if it is a woman. Then they think, how dare you have an opinion,” she explained. This stereotype presents a significant barrier, discouraging many from voicing their thoughts for fear of being dismissed or criticized.
Furthermore, Pannu pointed out the contradictory expectations placed on performers. “It’s a double-edged sword, I feel. If you have an opinion, then also it’s a problem. If you don’t have an opinion, then also it’s a problem.” This highlights the dilemma actors face, where either choice may result in societal condemnation.
Nevertheless, Taapsee Pannu stands out as a prominent voice in Bollywood, often unafraid to share her perspectives on pressing societal issues, showcasing a willingness to engage despite the potential for backlash.
