Tai Woffinden Injured in Serious Crash During Race in Poland

In a concerning incident, three-time Speedway world champion Tai Woffinden was airlifted to a hospital following a severe crash while competing in Poland. At 34 years old, Woffinden is British speedway racing’s most successful athlete, and he was racing for Rzeszow at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred during a three-rider race when Woffinden collided with teammate Franciszek Majewski as they approached the first turn. Due to the nature of the crash and Woffinden’s subsequent condition, the race meeting was abandoned.

Initial reports emerging from Poland indicate that Woffinden suffered a broken femur as well as fractures to both hands. Rzeszow’s official Facebook page provided updates regarding the incident, confirming the severity of the situation.

“Our rider, Tai Woffinden, had a very serious accident during the seventh race in a sparring match in Krosno,” the post stated. “He was transported by helicopter to Rzeszów, where his condition is being assessed by medical professionals. Further details will be shared following the examinations.” The statement also expressed gratitude towards Krosno’s president, Grzegorz Leśniak, for the swift response and assistance given to Woffinden.

Woffinden, who hails from Scunthorpe, had only recently returned to competitive racing after a lengthy recovery from a broken elbow that had sidelined him for nine months, thus compounding the gravity of this latest incident.

Sheffield Speedway released a statement acknowledging the crash and urged the public and fans to refrain from spreading rumors. “Sheffield Speedway are aware of a racing crash involving Tai Woffinden in Poland this afternoon,” the statement noted. “Out of respect for Tai and his family, we politely ask supporters not to respond to, or share, any rumours. We will provide supporters with an official update when it is appropriate to do so.”

The racing community continues to hold its breath as further developments regarding Woffinden’s health and recovery become available.
