Taiwan Tops World Happiness Report 2025 as the Happiest Country
Taiwan has been recognized as the happiest nation in East Asia, according to the latest findings from the World Happiness Report 2025. The island nation ranks 27th globally, surpassing its regional neighbors, including Japan, South Korea, and China, securing its place as a prominent leader in happiness metrics.
In this year’s assessment, 147 countries were evaluated, marking an improvement for Taiwan, which stood at 31st in the previous year. The island has now moved past Singapore to take the lead in East Asia. Finland continues to hold the title of the happiest country worldwide, achieving this for the eighth consecutive year.
For this comprehensive report, Gallup collected well-being data from over 100,000 participants internationally. The organization analyzed key factors contributing to happiness, such as healthy life expectancy, GDP per capita, social support, the frequency of charitable donations, the perception of freedom in decision-making, and views on governmental and corporate corruption.
An interesting takeaway from the report is the observation that our well-being is heavily influenced by our perceptions of others’ kindness and benevolence—often outweighing the impacts of adversities we encounter. Taiwan excels in both perceived and actual benevolent behaviors, highlighting its social climate.
A Gallup analysis shared with Travel + Leisure elucidates this insight: “… when society is more benevolent, the people who benefit most are those who are least happy. Therefore, happiness is more evenly distributed in nations that showcase higher levels of expected benevolence.”
Exploring Taiwan’s Vibrant Culture
The charm of Taiwan extends far beyond its happiness ranking. Renowned for its dynamic street food scene, extensive national parks—including the easily accessible Yangmingshan National Park—and a rich cultural tapestry, Taiwan offers a myriad of experiences.
In Taipei, the bustling capital, visitors can immerse themselves in vibrant night markets, marvel at iconic skyscrapers, and explore gems like the National Palace Museum, which houses a vast collection of Chinese art. Meanwhile, Tainan, renowned as Taiwan’s cultural capital, boasts historic architecture, delightful Southern-style Taiwanese cuisine, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Culinary Delights
Food plays a central role in Taiwan’s allure. The island is famous for its night markets, where culinary enthusiasts can dig into local specialties such as oyster omelets, braised pork rice, and stinky tofu. Notably, Taiwan is the birthplace of bubble tea, a beverage that has gained international fame. For tea aficionados, a trip from Taipei to Maokong offers a delightful exploration of the region’s tea farms.
Relaxation and Natural Wonders
For those seeking relaxation, Taiwan’s range of natural hot springs provides the perfect getaway. Beitou, easily reachable from Taipei, features traditional Japanese bathhouses, private rooms, and upscale resorts. Alternatively, the tranquil towns of Wulai or Ruisui offer stunning mountainous backdrops while soaking in serene hot springs.
Despite its relatively small size, Taiwan is rich in diverse landscapes and attractions. An efficient train and high-speed rail network makes it convenient for travelers to explore the vast array of environments the island has to offer.
Other East Asian countries that ranked in the top ten of the happiness report include Singapore, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, and China.
