The resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons has captured significant attention in recent years, with key contributors to this trend highlighted by the cast of Critical Role. Taliesin Jaffe, a prominent member of the group, attributes a substantial part of this renewed interest to the rise of livestreaming platforms, particularly Twitch.
When Critical Role debuted its first episode in 2015, Dungeons & Dragons was still a niche hobby with limited mainstream recognition. It was only in 2016, with its inclusion in the hit series Stranger Things, that the game began to break into the broader cultural consciousness.

In a recent interview with Dexerto’s Fall Damage, Jaffe discussed the previously “insular” nature of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), explaining how they often struggle to reach audiences beyond the immediate players: “If you try and take this story out of that room, it’s just gonna deflate like a dream, attempting to explain the best dream you’ve ever had to a friend.”

However, he highlighted how Twitch has changed this dynamic: “Thanks to Twitch, suddenly one of these things could be lifted up out of the bottom of the ocean to be seen in daylight,” which has contributed greatly to the popularity of Dungeons & Dragons.
Jaffe further reflected, “It really hadn’t occurred to me that it would really connect to a lot of people,” emphasizing the emotional depth of TTRPGs and how livestreaming has been instrumental in bringing these experiences to wider audiences.

Just a decade later, Dungeons & Dragons has become one of the most celebrated games, with countless players broadcasting their sessions online daily.
