Fatal Collision in Polk County Involves Semi-Truck
POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when a man from Tampa lost his life in a head-on collision with a semi-truck just north of Lakeland.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Rescue, emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the crash at approximately 3:16 a.m. The location was reported to be on US 98 North, near Earnest Road.
Initial investigations indicated that a 36-year-old man from Tampa was operating his pickup truck southbound on US 98. In an attempt to overtake another vehicle also heading south, he veered into the northbound lanes of traffic.
Simultaneously, a semi-truck was travelling north on US 98. The impending collision was unavoidable, resulting in the fatal impact. Miraculously, the driver and passenger of the semi-truck emerged from the crash uninjured, while the Tampa man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities noted that the road was closed for nearly five hours as they worked to clear the site and gather evidence. Fortunately, officials from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated that they do not anticipate any criminal or civil charges as a result of the accident. The investigation into the crash, however, is still ongoing.
