Health Canada Issues Recall for Tattoo Inks Over Infection Risks
Health Canada has issued a warning regarding the recall of certain tattoo inks that may endanger skin health due to potential microbial contamination. The affected products are two types of water-based tattoo pigments from the brand Bloodline, specifically the All Purpose Black and Carolina Blue variants.
The recall was announced on Wednesday, highlighting concerns that these inks could harbor microorganisms that pose a risk to consumer health. Health Canada emphasized that using such contaminated tattoo inks could lead to skin infections.
According to the agency, approximately 120 units of the affected inks were sold in Canada prior to the recall, which impacts products manufactured in the United States by Sierra Stain LLC in 2022. These inks are marked with an expiration date of July 1, 2026.
Health Risks and Recommendations
Health Canada has urged consumers in possession of these inks to cease any use immediately and to dispose of them according to local municipal hazardous waste protocols. This precaution is vital to prevent any potential health issues that may arise from exposure to contaminated products.
This recall extends beyond Canadian borders; the U.S. also saw the recall of three Bloodline tattoo pigments last month due to similar health concerns. Fortunately, no adverse events or injuries have been reported related to these inks in either Canada or the U.S. as of early September.
However, it is important to note that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated that Sierra Stain LLC, the company behind Bloodline inks, is no longer operational and has ceased all manufacturing of tattoo inks.
Symptoms of Infection to Watch For
Consumers and tattoo enthusiasts should be aware of potential symptoms of infection associated with the use of contaminated tattoo inks. Common signs may include the development of rashes or lesions, particularly red papules in the areas where the ink was applied. In some cases, these infections may even result in permanent scarring, according to the FDA.
This recall serves as a reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about the products they use for body art and to stay informed about safety recalls to mitigate health risks.
