Taylor Swift May Star in Remake of Whitney Houston Classic “The Bodyguard”
Taylor Swift taking on the role of a pop star in a reimagining of a classic film seems like a fitting choice, and recent reports suggest that it’s a possibility. As per insiders, Swift is reportedly nearing a deal to star in an upcoming remake of the 1992 film, The Bodyguard, originally featuring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. The news comes alongside the announcement that Sam Wrench, who directed Swift’s concert documentary Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, will helm the new project, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
The original The Bodyguard revolved around a famous actress and singer, portrayed by Houston, who hires a bodyguard, played by Costner, to protect her from a stalker. Their professional relationship grows more complex as romantic feelings develop. The film’s soundtrack became iconic, featuring hits such as “I Will Always Love You” and “I’m Every Woman.”
Reports indicate that Swift’s negotiations may involve her writing and performing new music for the film. Discussions about merchandise and the choice of her on-screen partner are also reportedly part of the talks.
While some sources claim that the deal is nearly finalized, others have cast doubt on the accuracy of these reports.
Swift has dabbled in acting throughout her career. In 2019, she portrayed Bombalurina in the film adaptation of Cats. More recently, in 2022, she played Liz Meekins in David O. Russell’s film Amsterdam. She has also made various cameos in TV shows and films like New Girl, The Giver, CSI, and Valentine’s Day.
Tyra Banks has publicly supported the idea of Swift taking on this role. During a conversation on Today with Jenna & Friends, Banks expressed her belief that Swift would be an excellent choice, citing both commercial potential and artistic fit. She also provocatively suggested that a casting twist could enhance the narrative: imagining Swift alongside Idris Elba in a reversal of the original film’s racial dynamics.
Swift herself has expressed a desire for more acting opportunities in the past. In a previous interview with Variety, she mentioned her interest in roles that challenge her in new ways, emphasizing the importance of value and adventure in her artistic choices.
Since completing her Eras Tour last year and supporting boyfriend Travis Kelce at the Super Bowl, Swift has embraced a quieter period. Reports suggest that the couple is currently taking a break from the limelight to focus on their relationship. They have been enjoying simple pleasures like movie nights, playing board games, and spending quality time with family, which has been described as a “special time” for both of them.
