In an interview with CNBC Make It, Munson suggests that while it’s advisable to “dress for the role you want,” this doesn’t necessarily mean adhering to formal styles.
In today’s world, especially with the prevalence of virtual interviews, candidates might find that opting for more comfortable and less formal clothing could serve them better. Munson emphasizes that when candidates appear overly serious or uncomfortable, it can detract from the overall interview experience. “When candidates aren’t dressed in a way that feels authentic to them, it shows,” she asserts. Instead of rigid adherence to traditional dress codes, Munson values a candidate’s comfort and confidence as indicators of potential fit within the company.
While Munson advocates for a relaxed approach to interview attire, she also stresses the importance of maintaining respect for the position being applied for. This means that even in a virtual setting, the way one dresses should still reflect a level of professionalism.
Determining the Right Dress Code for Interviews
The appropriate dress code for interviews can vary widely based on the nature and culture of the organization, as highlighted by recruiter Farah Sharghi. She advises that candidates should aim to match the formality of their attire to that of current employees, or slightly exceed it for a balanced approach.
For instance, if a candidate is interviewing at a more traditional company, a button-up shirt, trousers, and polished shoes may be appropriate. Conversely, roles within startups or less formal environments could warrant collared shirts paired with khakis. Sharghi’s key recommendation for determining what to wear is to consult directly with recruiters, who possess insights into the organization’s cultural norms.
“Take the advice from your recruiter seriously,” Sharghi emphasizes, as their guidance can provide clarity on suitable attire based on their familiarity with the company’s expectations.
