Ted Christie, the Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Airlines, is resigning from his position, with the transition taking effect on Monday, according to a company announcement.
In the interim, the airline will be overseen by a team of executives including Chief Financial Officer Fred Cromer, Chief Operating Officer John Bendoraitis, and General Counsel Thomas Canfield, until a new leader is appointed.
Christie led Spirit Airlines since 2019, navigating the carrier through the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recently, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November, a move attributed to a series of financial challenges stemming from ongoing losses, an unsuccessful merger, increased competition, and evolving consumer preferences.
Notably, Spirit became the first major U.S. airline to enter bankruptcy since 2011, reflecting the significant pressures facing carriers in the current market. However, the airline successfully emerged from bankruptcy protection last month.
