What you need to know
Telegram has rolled out a significant update to its messaging platform, introducing new capabilities such as the ability for Android users to cast videos to devices that support Chromecast. This update not only enhances user experience but also provides content creators and public figures with elevated privacy controls and monetization options.
The recent blog post from Telegram elaborates on these updates, noting that videos shared within Telegram can now be viewed on larger screens thanks to compatibility with Chromecast devices. This feature is anticipated to be compatible with smart TVs that support Chromecast, enhancing the viewing experience for users.
According to the update, “Android users can now cast videos straight to their Chromecast devices — whether you’re watching memes with friends or presenting important content in a meeting, enjoy it all on the big screen!” The process itself is designed to be straightforward: users simply open a video in the Telegram app, tap the Settings icon at the top right, and select the Chromecast option. This functionality mirrors similar features on popular streaming services like YouTube and Netflix.
In addition to video casting, Telegram has made advancements specifically aimed at content creators and prominent figures, emphasizing user privacy while also opening up avenues for monetization. With an influx of messages, these users can establish a fee for incoming communications from individuals not on their contacts list. This mechanism not only allows them to earn ‘Stars’—a potential currency within the platform—but also empowers them to manage their interactions better. Moreover, they can filter out unwanted messages, ensuring only those willing to share Stars can reach out.
Telegram emphasizes that these options can extend to group chats and channels, promoting focused discussions and minimizing spam risks.
In a further enhancement to user interaction, when someone attempts to contact a user for the first time, Telegram will now present a new detailed information page. This will include relevant information such as the user’s country, shared groups, joining date, and other crucial details aimed at reducing spam while preventing impersonation.
Lastly, Telegram Gateway emerges as an innovative, cost-effective alternative to traditional user authentication methods. This feature enables users to verify their customers’ phone numbers via Telegram, aiming to replace costly SMS verification processes. Where standard SMS services can charge upwards of $0.50 per message, Telegram Gateway offers its services at just $0.01, marking a substantial reduction in operational costs for businesses.
