Following a devastating fire that ravaged part of the historic village of Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island, efforts to restore the area are now in progress.
The disaster, which occurred on New Year’s Eve, has significantly impacted the community, well-known for its ecotourism appeal. In the aftermath, local business owners, including those running the Telegraph Cove Resort, have expressed their determination to rebuild.
Gordie Graham, the resort’s owner, indicated that necessary government approvals for restoration have been secured. The immediate focus will be on clearing debris and addressing damage to existing structures.
Key Updates
Plans include reconstructing the boardwalk and docks, as well as the offices that facilitate whale watching and bear tours. Graham remains optimistic about the future, stating, “I think it’s going to be a good year. It’s a very important place to so many people and the North Island.”
Amid the challenges posed by the fire, community support has been a source of solace. “The response of our neighbours and everybody else has sure taken the edge off the tragedy,” Graham noted.
Despite the destruction, interest in visiting Telegraph Cove has not waned; summer reservations are reportedly strong. Graham is hopeful that the new version of the resort will be operational by early May.
“The way people have stepped forward, it’s phenomenal,” he added, highlighting the community spirit in the face of adversity.
