Memphis Man Pleads Guilty to Murder in College Student’s Death
A repeat offender connected to the murder of a Rhodes College student during a 2021 home invasion has entered a guilty plea and received a lengthy prison sentence. Rainess Holmes, aged 40, was sentenced to serve 100% of a 20-year term for second-degree murder, in addition to nine years for his involvement in three separate burglary cases.
Holmes, described as a career criminal with a record that stretches back to 2005, was one of four individuals who unlawfully entered a Memphis residence shared by college students at approximately 5:40 a.m. on October 3, 2021. According to Shelby County court documents, the intruders, wearing hoodies to conceal their identities, forced their way into the home and demanded the students’ electronic devices.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the intruders demanded a passcode from 22-year-old senior Andrew “Drew” Rainer before he was shot when he failed to comply. The group fled the scene with stolen electronics, including cell phones and gaming systems.
Upon responding to the incident, Memphis police discovered Rainer deceased with a gunshot wound inside the home. Efforts to track down the stolen iPad led police to a hotel where Holmes was located. However, he managed to flee but was captured two days later and featured briefly on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Most Wanted list.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office emphasized its close collaboration with Rainer’s family throughout the legal proceedings. They attended the court hearings and expressed support for the outcome. It was noted that while Holmes pleaded guilty, he was not the individual who fired the fatal shot that killed Rainer. Authorities continue to seek the other three suspects involved in the home invasion, with Crime Stoppers offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to additional arrests.
A memorial fund entitled “Live Like Drew” has been established in Rainer’s honor, reflecting on his strong character and passions. Rainer was remembered as someone who exemplified love and courage, both in his personal life and as a dedicated member of his community. His obituary highlighted his accomplishments as an Eagle Scout and musician in an 80s rock band, portraying him as a kind, intelligent, and spirited individual, cherished by friends and family alike.
As the investigation remains open, Major Webb Kirkdoffer from the Memphis Police Department’s Homicide Bureau reiterated the need for public assistance in bringing all responsible parties to justice. The community continues to mourn the loss of Andrew Rainer while efforts are underway to resolve the remaining aspects of this tragic case.
