Tennis: Face Down in the Garden Tour
Alaina Moore:
Reflecting on our recent journey across the country, we encountered an unusual challenge: our van and trailer suffered the misfortune of blowing four tires in rapid succession during a stretch of highway notorious for its hazards. While we were stranded on the side of the road, I gazed at the aftermath—a grim count of 12 tire remnants littering the surrounding landscape. This stressful moment sharply contrasted with the exhilarating performance we had just delivered in Houston. Such is the unpredictable nature of touring, offering periodic highs and lows that feel both surreal and disorienting. It was here, on the weary shoulder of I-40, that inspiration struck, leading me to pen the lyrics for “12 Blown Tires.” This song encapsulates a tapestry of memories not only from the road but also from our shared journey through marriage—a beautiful intersection of both significant life paths.
A few months later, when we recorded “12 Blown Tires,” I felt a strong urge to distill our 15 years together into a brief four-minute track. The process felt final, as if we were reaching the conclusion of a significant chapter, although I couldn’t quite pinpoint what that meant. Over the years, Patrick and I dedicated our twenties and thirties to developing our music as Tennis. The experience has been nothing short of joyous yet bewildering, filled with challenges that have deeply humbled us. Upon completing Face Down in the Garden, it became evident that we had achieved what we set out to do as a band; we conveyed our thoughts and feelings completely. This will mark our final studio album, at least in our current formation as Tennis. We feel ready to explore new creative ventures and embrace fresh opportunities in our lives. Consequently, our upcoming tour takes on a more poignant atmosphere, serving as a reflective conclusion. We are those two kids from Denver who once only wished to perform at a handful of house shows, and now we feel fulfilled. We hope to see you on this journey. Thank you for your unwavering support.
