Terry Brooks Passes the Torch: A New Era for the Shannara Series
Terry Brooks, a pivotal figure in the realm of epic fantasy, made his literary debut with the first installment of the Shannara series in 1977. Over the decades, he has not only penned numerous bestsellers but has also sold over 25 million copies worldwide. At the recent Emerald City Comic Con in 2025, Brooks revealed a significant milestone in his career: he is retiring from writing.
During a panel discussion at the event, Brooks reflected on his creative journey, confessing that he spent the past year working on a manuscript that ultimately failed to materialize. This experience led him to the decision to pass the responsibility of continuing his cherished Shannara saga to another author. Delilah S. Dawson, who was present in the audience, has been chosen to carry forward the legacy of the Shannara series. Dawson is known for her works such as Kill the Farm Boy, The Violence, and most recently, Bloom. Notably, Dawson shares a birth year with the inception of the Shannara series, making her connection to the franchise even more poignant.
Brooks emphasized that his decision to transfer the series’ stewardship is unique, as it typically occurs posthumously. He expressed his eagerness to witness the direction the story takes under Dawson’s guidance. Having collaborated with her previously, Brooks remarked on her capability and courage to embrace this new challenge, to which Dawson humorously responded, “Wait, you’re going to be troublesome with this?”
This transition marks an important chapter not just for Brooks, but for the expansive world he created. Fans of the Shannara series can look forward to new stories and adventures that continue to explore the rich tapestry of this beloved fantasy saga, ensuring its legacy endures while evolving in new and exciting directions.
