Texas Longhorns Overcome Vanderbilt Commodores in Historic Matchup
The Texas Longhorns faced off against the Vanderbilt Commodores at FirstBank Stadium, marking their first meeting since 1928. This encounter also signified a notable achievement for Texas, as they secured their first victory in Nashville since 1925, winning the game 27-24.
Quarterback Quinn Ewers rebounded from a disappointing loss to Georgia the previous week, passing for 288 yards and throwing three touchdowns. Among his highlights, a 25-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr. in the second quarter expanded Texas’s lead to 21-7, marking Moore’s second touchdown of the game.
Despite two interceptions, Ewers demonstrated resilience. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian defended his quarterback’s performance, attributing the turnovers to unfortunate circumstances rather than poor play. “Well, I thought he showed great composure, and I really thought he played well,” Sarkisian remarked. He emphasized that Ewers managed to maintain an efficient game, connecting with key players when it mattered most.
The Commodores, however, did not relent easily. Quarterback Diego Pavia initiated a comeback effort with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Junior Sherrill in the third quarter, narrowing the score. Later, Pavia threw another touchdown, this time to Eli Stowers, reducing Texas’s lead to just three points with 46 seconds left on the clock. Despite their late surge, Vanderbilt was unable to regain possession of the ball to mount a final challenge.
With this victory, the No. 5 Texas Longhorns improved to 7-1 for the season, while the No. 25 Vanderbilt Commodores fell to 5-3, reflecting the competitive nature of the SEC conference.
As the season progresses, both teams will be looking to build on this encounter, with Texas aiming for further success in their conference play and Vanderbilt aiming to regroup for future games.
