Texas Utility Launches Innovative Weather Station Network to Improve Hurricane Season Preparedness

Recent events in Texas have underscored the urgent need for improved power infrastructure, as over 2 million customers experienced prolonged outages during a blistering summer, exacerbated by Hurricane Beryl. The financial burden of repairing damaged infrastructure is substantial, with costs reaching billions, a significant portion of which will ultimately fall on the ratepayers. Additionally, the inadequacy of utility outage reporting was highlighted by the superior performance of the Whataburger app in tracking outages.

In response to these challenges, CenterPoint Energy is making significant strides to enhance resilience ahead of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1. The utility has commenced the installation of a comprehensive network of weather monitoring stations designed to improve situational awareness during severe weather incidents. By the start of the hurricane season, CenterPoint aims to establish 100 stations across the Greater Houston area, providing critical real-time data throughout its 12-county service territory.

Serving approximately 7 million customers across states including Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Texas, CenterPoint will be the first investor-owned utility in Texas to implement such a dedicated weather monitoring network. This initiative is part of the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI), which encompasses a series of completed tasks aimed at improving customer communication, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing overall resiliency.

The weather stations will be strategically placed on existing electrical infrastructure throughout the service area. These devices will collect data every 2 to 5 minutes, monitoring critical factors such as humidity, wind speed, temperature, and rainfall. This information will empower CenterPoint and local emergency management teams to more accurately predict severe weather, better allocate resources, and respond swiftly to potential impacts on the electrical grid while improving customer service around the clock.

Describing the establishment of this network as a “historic moment,” Matt Lanza, CenterPoint’s meteorology manager, emphasized the importance of real-time data. “Our weather network will provide invaluable situational awareness, helping us act quickly and precisely before severe weather impacts our systems and customers. We will be able to share this information with emergency partners and the public to enhance community preparedness,” Lanza noted.

Other Storm Preparedness Measures

The weather monitoring initiative is just one of many endeavors undertaken through the GHRI to enhance preparation for severe weather and strengthen the electrical grid. Additional actions include:

  • Installing 25,000 robust, storm-resistant poles designed to endure extreme wind conditions.
  • Implementing 4,850 automated reliability devices that can self-heal, significantly minimizing outage impacts and speeding up restoration times.
  • Clearing hazardous vegetation along 4,000 miles of power lines to mitigate storm-related outages.
  • Undergrounding 400 miles of power lines to bolster overall grid resilience.

Upon completion of these initiatives, CenterPoint anticipates a marked improvement in grid reliability, projecting a reduction in customer outages by over 125 million minutes annually.
