Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL Gains New Investors from New York
The New York Golf Club, part of the innovative TGL league established by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, has announced an impressive lineup of investors representing the Big Apple. The club is attracting significant attention as notable figures, including Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, CC Sabathia, Michael Strahan, John McEnroe, and Jimmy Fallon, join its ranks as limited partners, as revealed by Cohen Private Ventures on Thursday.
This investment group highlights the growing star power behind the league, which is set to officially commence on January 7, coinciding with the 2025 FedEx Cup season. Specific financial details regarding this partnership have not been made public.
Steve Cohen, who is also the owner of the New York Mets, secured the rights to the New York Golf team in September. The team features renowned players such as Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Cameron Young, who will represent the club in its first competitive season.
Cohen expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “New York has the greatest fans in the world, and we have built a team that will make New Yorkers proud. We believe this fresh, innovative take on the sport will appeal to traditional and new golf fans alike,” in an interview with CNBC.
Eli Manning, a celebrated former quarterback for the New York Giants, shared his understanding of the palpable sports enthusiasm among New Yorkers. “There [have] been a lot of exciting trends in golf with participation growing on and off the course,” he remarked, indicating a positive outlook for the growth of golf within the city.
TGL positions itself as a cutting-edge, primetime golf league, brought to life through the collaboration of Woods, McIlroy, and Golf Channel executive Mike McCarley. The league operates in partnership with the PGA Tour, which serves as an investor, enhancing its stature within the sporting community. In a significant milestone, ESPN secured the broadcasting rights for TGL last October.
This dynamic league will showcase professional golfers divided into six teams that will engage in two-hour, head-to-head match play at a state-of-the-art facility located in Palm Beach, Florida. The league’s launch has faced challenges, including a setback in 2024 when a power outage caused the dome intended for competitions to collapse.
Beyond the New York Golf Club’s new investor group, TGL has garnered considerable interest from other sports icons, including NBA stars Stephen Curry, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kevin Durant, as well as MLB athletes Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Additional prominent figures such as NFL quarterback Josh Allen, tennis star Serena Williams, and Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton have also joined as investors.
Derek Jeter, a former New York Yankees captain, expressed his excitement for the club, emphasizing the blend of his love for golf with a passion for New York. “I’m looking forward to seeing NYGC added to New York’s sports legacy,” Jeter stated, reflecting a hopeful sentiment about the league’s impact.
