68th Annual Obie Awards Winners Announced
The American Theatre Wing has revealed the winners of the prestigious Obie Awards, honoring excellence in Off and Off-Off-Broadway theatre for the 2023-2024 season. This marks the 68th iteration of the awards, which are considered the highest accolades within this segment of the theatre community. The ceremony showcased celebrated artists, including Cole Escola and Dianne Wiest, alongside the vibrant ensemble of *Cats: The Jellicle Ball*, among others.
The Obie Awards celebrate a wide array of outstanding performances and productions that have made significant cultural contributions over the past theatre season in New York City. This year’s judging panel comprised a diverse group of individuals from various theatre disciplines, including Aya Ogawa, a notable writer and director; David Greenspan, known for his work as both playwright and actor; and Diep Tran, the Editor in Chief of Playbill. Additional judges included Heather Alicia Simms, celebrated for her role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning production of *Fairview*; Modesto “Flako” Jimenez, a versatile artist; Nikiya Mathis, recognized with the Henry Heard Design Award; Ryan J. Haddad, who embodies both acting and playwriting; and Taylor Reynolds, who has also received an Obie Award for directing.
Continuing their involvement, scenic designer Wilson Chin and playwright Haruna Lee returned to the judging panel. Both serve as co-chairs and contributed significantly to the critical assessment of over 300 productions this season. The panel engaged in in-depth discussions and evaluations before arriving at their final decisions, underscoring the rigorous process behind these esteemed awards.
