ANBERNIC Launches its First Device of 2025: The RG-557
ANBERNIC has finally taken the wraps off its first device for 2025, the RG-557, following a remarkable year in which the company launched 12 new handhelds. Positioned as a formidable contender against other retro gaming devices, particularly the Retroid Pocket 5, the RG-557 boasts a large AMOLED display and advanced processing capabilities.
The RG-557 is equipped with a generous 5.48-inch HD AMOLED display, maintaining a similar size and design to its predecessor, the RG-556, which was unveiled in March of the previous year. However, this new model promises significantly enhanced performance, aimed at emulating games from the Wii U and upscaling PlayStation 2 titles with notable efficiency.
While ANBERNIC has yet to disclose the complete specifications of the RG-557, early indicators suggest that it may feature the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 processor coupled with 8GB of RAM. This chip, while not the latest G2 Gen 2 version unveiled recently, represents a capable mid-tier gaming solution that could potentially elevate gaming experiences beyond those offered by earlier models, such as the RG-556, which utilized the more budget-friendly UNISOC Tiger T820 chipset.
In a recent demonstration, the RG-557 showcased its ability to smoothly run some of the more demanding Android games, along with titles from the Wii U and upscaled PS2 games. This performance leap suggests that, if the RG-557 incorporates the rumored Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 chipset, it may indeed be ANBERNIC’s most powerful device to date.
Despite not having formal pricing details available yet, expectations indicate that the RG-557 will likely be marketed at a higher price point than the RG-556, which retails around $170. However, given ANBERNIC’s reputation for offering budget-friendly and mid-range handheld devices, the RG-557 is anticipated to deliver significant power relative to its expected cost, making it an enticing option for retro gaming enthusiasts.
As speculation circulates regarding the capabilities and potential pricing of this new model, many in the gaming community are keenly awaiting additional information on release dates and specifications.
