New Zealand’s indie band The Beths is embracing a new chapter with the introduction of fresh music, a record label signing, and upcoming tour dates.

The Auckland-based group made a splash this week with the release of their latest single, “Metal,” marking their first musical offering since the expanded edition of their 2022 album Expert in a Dying Field. The original version of the album achieved a remarkable peak at number 6 on the Heatseekers chart, while the reissue included the new track “Watching the Credits,” which was also featured on Barack Obama’s summer playlist in 2023.

Simultaneously, The Beths announced their recent signing with ANTI-, a label affiliated with Epitaph, suggesting that exciting news regarding their fourth album may be on the horizon. In the meantime, “Metal” serves as a preview of what fans can expect, inspired by the band’s extensive touring, challenges related to mental health, and various experiences faced by vocalist Elizabeth Stokes.

Stokes shared her insights on “Metal,” stating, “In many respects, this song reflects the experience of being alive in a human body.” She emphasizes her intensified awareness of her health journey over the past few years.

She elaborated, “For a significant period, I felt like my body was a reliable vehicle, but it began to break down in ways that felt beyond my control. The unpredictable nature of life is astonishing, and yet here we are. I possess an intense curiosity to understand the world around me and to introspectively discover more about myself. Despite feeling as if my body falters at times, I continue to be amazed by its intricate design.”

Stokes further remarked, “I can acknowledge this knowledge while still feeling self-critical, thinking things like ‘you are not enough’ or ‘you don’t measure up.’ I have grown accustomed to rejecting suggestions of my capability, which I refer to in the song.”

Alongside their new single, The Beths have disclosed exciting plans for an extensive global tour kicking off in the U.K. this September, followed by a series of performances throughout Europe. The North American leg of the tour will feature 26 shows from October to November.
