The Beths have made a significant move by signing with Anti-Records, signaling an exciting new chapter for the band from New Zealand. Accompanying this announcement is a rigorous tour of North America and Europe, alongside the release of their latest song, “Metal.” This release marks their first new music since the expanded edition of their 2022 album, Expert in a Dying Field. The music video for “Metal” is available for viewing, along with a complete list of their upcoming tour dates.
Elizabeth Stokes, the band’s singer and guitarist, shared her insights about the song, describing it as a reflection on experiencing life through the lens of her recent “health journey.” Stokes explained, “For portions of the last few years, I’ve felt as if my body was a vehicle that has served me well but is now breaking down — a process beyond my control. The intricate, almost improbable series of events that make up life leave me both fascinated and frustrated.” She elaborated on her inner conflict, expressing both admiration for the body’s complexity and a harsh self-critique: “I can recognize this complexity, yet often, I find myself pointing out perceived flaws when I look in the mirror, labeling myself as ‘ugly’ or ‘worthless.’ It’s a dual perspective that resonates throughout the song.”
The Beths’ upcoming tour kicks off in Dublin, Ireland, on September 18 and will span multiple cities across Europe and the UK, before transitioning to North America for performances in various locations throughout the United States and Canada. The tour will feature supporting acts including Phoebe Rings, Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords, Squirrel Flower, and Illuminati Hotties.
For those interested in the band’s previous work, Expert in a Dying Field was recognized in various music lists, including “The 50 Best Albums of 2022.”
