Warner Bros. has officially appointed a director for its upcoming remake of The Bodyguard.
Sam Wrench, an acclaimed filmmaker recognized for his work on the 2023 concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, is set to take the helm of the reimagined version of the cherished 1992 romantic thriller. This information comes from The Hollywood Reporter. The original film featured notable performances by Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.
Details about the cast for the new adaptation have not yet been revealed. The script is being crafted by Jonathan Abrams, who was responsible for the screenplay of Juror #2, directed by Clint Eastwood last year. A previous draft was created by Matthew López, a director and playwright, as the project has been in development since 2011, according to reports from THR.
Wrench’s reputation has been bolstered by his success with projects that showcase prominent musical artists. His film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour quickly became the highest-grossing concert film in history, raking in an impressive $179.2 million during its nine-week run in theaters that began in October 2023. The film has since crossed the $250 million threshold in global ticket sales, as reported by AMC Theatres. It was filmed during the initial nights of Swift’s tour at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Other noteworthy projects directed by Wrench include A Nonsense Christmas, starring Sabrina Carpenter, which debuted on Netflix during the 2023 holiday season. He has also lent his directorial skills to various projects for artists including BTS, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and Mary J. Blige. Additionally, he received a Grammy nomination for best music film for Billie Eilish Live at the O2 in late 2022.
The original Bodyguard, directed by Mick Jackson, was a remarkable success at the box office, amassing $411 million globally. Its soundtrack remains one of the best-selling and most celebrated film score albums in history, with over 12.1 million copies sold. The original film also produced several tracks that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including notable hits like “I’m Every Woman,” “I Have Nothing,” and the monumental No. 1 single “I Will Always Love You.”
