“The Brutalist” offers a narrative centered on László Tóth, a Jewish architect of Hungarian descent and a survivor of the Holocaust, portrayed by Adrien Brody. Directed by Brady Corbet and produced alongside Mona Fastvold, the film is a work of fiction, not a dramatization of real events.
Shot in 35mm and then scanned to achieve a quality comparable to 70mm, “The Brutalist” is an impressive three-plus hours long, showcasing a significant cinematic endeavor.
In a favorable review from TheWrap, critic Ben Croll remarked, “As a complete piece, ‘The Brutalist’ offers a dual tribute: it commemorates and critiques the American dream—highlighting the aspirations of immigrants seeking new beginnings, alongside the artistic motivations of a filmmaker driven by personal obsessions.”
The film made its debut at the Venice Film Festival, where it garnered significant acclaim, earning Corbet the Silver Lion. It has also been featured at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
Released in theaters on December 20, “The Brutalist” features a notable ensemble cast that includes Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach de Bankolé, and Alessandro Nivola.
Production for the film was carried out by Trevor Matthews and Nick Gordon for Brookstreet U.K., in collaboration with Brian Young and Andrew Morrison of Kaplan Morrison. Additional producers include Andrew Lauren from Andrew Lauren Productions and D.J. Gugenheim. Financing support comes from various entities, including Lip Sync Productions, Richmond Pictures, Meyohas Studio, Carte Blanche, Pierce Capital Entertainment, and senior lender Cofiloisirs.
CAA Media Finance facilitated the financial deal, while Protagonist Pictures handled international rights negotiations with Focus Features.
Will “The Brutalist” be available on streaming?
Currently, “The Brutalist” is exclusively in theaters. There are plans for the film to stream on Max, following a distribution arrangement between A24 and Warner Brothers, the latter being the owner of the streaming service.
While an official streaming release date on Max has yet to be announced, there is speculation that it could become available in the spring.
