Through my numerous viewings of Pride and Prejudice, I’ve gleaned several insights from the Bennet family dwelling, which I have since infused into my own Brooklyn living space. Here are my findings.
Blend Different Eras
The Bennet household showcases an eclectic mix of furnishings from various centuries and styles, giving it a distinctive, curated charm. According to Greenwood, “[People admire] the furniture in that house… but to Mrs. Bennet, it was simply old furniture.” This principle highlights the beauty in a diverse collection over a uniform style, providing a narrative of history and character in the décor.
Cover Every Surface
The Bennet family exemplified maximalism long before it gained popularity. With a bustling household of seven, including five lively daughters who engage in reading and creative pursuits, the home is comfortably cluttered with books, ink bottles, and everyday items. No area—from dining tables to desks and pianos—is untouched by this organized chaos. This philosophy of purposeful clutter is one I have embraced in my own home.
Incorporate Fresh Flowers
While my arrangements may come from a local shop, having a bouquet in a charming vase brings a slice of the English countryside into my space. I suggest selecting bright yellows and whites, reminiscent of the Bennet home’s style.
Emphasize Oil Paintings
Right from the start of the film, viewers are transported into Longbourn, where Mary Bennet plays the pianoforte amidst an array of beautifully framed portraits. The home features a collection of these artworks against its classically blue walls. Since my first encounter with Pride and Prejudice, I have amassed a collection of oil paintings that I believe would find favor with Mrs. Bennet.
Commemorating Pride and Prejudice
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, Focus Features is re-releasing the critically acclaimed film in select theaters across the country. Greenwood shares, “We had such fun making it and that joy resonates in the film. It was a blissful summer.” For those eager to experience a slice of life akin to Elizabeth Bennet’s and Mr. Darcy’s, consider visiting the film’s various real-life locations in England, many of which are accessible to the public.

One of the key settings, Longbourn, stands as a symbol of the film’s rich storytelling.
In the film, you can spot actors Simon Woods and Pike portraying their characters against the backdrop of this iconic setting.
