Fiction often finds a strange resonance with reality in Russia. On April 2, 2023, military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky attended an event in St. Petersburg organized by Cyber Front Z, a group of online supporters who amplify Kremlin propaganda during the war. With a substantial following on Telegram, Tatarsky had gained significant notoriety in Russia’s digital landscape.
During the event, a young woman with blonde hair approached Tatarsky and presented him with an unusual gift—a gold-painted statue of himself. Just moments later, the statue detonated, leading to Tatarsky’s death and injuring 42 others. The woman, identified as Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old local, was arrested soon after. She claimed she believed the statue contained a surveillance device, not an explosive, and that she acted under instructions from a man in Ukraine known only as “Gestalt.”
Trepova’s background was not typical of an assassin. She was a vegan feminist who had left medical school to work at a vintage clothing shop, previously detained for participating in anti-war demonstrations in February 2022. Tatarsky, a social media influencer without actual political power, was an unexpected target, raising questions about the motivations behind the attack. Ultimately, Trepova was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
The incident, surreal yet troubling, seems reminiscent of a storyline from Victor Olegovich Pelevin, a renowned Russian author known for blending reality with a fantastical narrative. Interestingly, “Vladlen Tatarsky” was not an influencer’s real name; it was a pseudonym inspired by a character from Pelevin’s 1999 novel, Generation P. Although Pelevin himself has refrained from public comment, his latest work, Cool, published in late 2024, makes a curious reference to Trepova, presenting a fictionalized version named Darya Troedyrkina—a pronounced feminist caricature charged with eliminating a male dictator.
