WARNING: The following story contains spoilers about the fifth episode of The Handmaid’s Tale’s sixth and final season, “Janine.”
The sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale continues to explore themes of resolution and revolution, bringing pivotal characters back to Gilead to instigate change from within. For Moira, portrayed by Samira Wiley, this journey is more than just a return to a familiar setting—it represents a renewal of the character’s spirit and her enduring friendship with Elisabeth Moss.
Reflecting on her character’s arc, Wiley describes how Moira, the fierce individual introduced in Season 1 with her rebellious spirit, ultimately concludes her journey in a way that aligns with her identity. “This season has allowed me to explore aspects of Moira that I’ve never had the chance to express in any other role,” Wiley shared. She emphasized how loyal fans of the series will see their commitment rewarded through impactful storytelling.
While Moira escaped Gilead early in the series, her battle against the regime has been profoundly different from June’s. Wiley notes that Moira has been integral to the Mayday efforts but has also carried the burdens of a surrogate mother while living with June’s family. Now, facing Gilead together, Wiley expresses her excitement to finally portray the dynamic of Moira and June fighting side by side. “Playing off of someone as talented as Lizzie was a thrill, particularly since she directed many episodes this season,” Wiley commented.
The complex dynamics of June and Moira were not without conflict. Their differing strategies against Gilead’s oppressive rule created tensions, particularly evident in the fifth episode where they venture back into the site of Moira’s trauma—Jezebel’s—in search of Janine (Madeline Brewer).
Wiley praised the set design, recounting how stepping back into Jezebel’s evoked strong memories from the first season, drawing her back into the emotions of Moira’s past suffering. “It was both a haunting return and a new chapter,” she remarked, acknowledging the emotional weight of confronting past experiences while pushing forward with their mission.
The episode featured a significant exchange between Moira and June, exploring the nuances of their individual traumas. “Understanding each other’s pain was crucial,” Wiley noted, emphasizing that discussions about trauma should foster solidarity rather than division among those oppressed by a common enemy.
In a climactic moment, Moira confronts a guard who threatens her and June, leading to a violent struggle that results in her killing him. Wiley described how performing this scene was deeply empowering, allowing her to revisit Moira’s fire and spirit. “Through this act of defiance, Moira not only reclaims her agency but also solidifies her bond with June,” she explained.
Wiley believes that this pivotal moment not only transforms Moira but also enhances her relationship with June, demonstrating shared strength against their shared adversities. “This experience takes away fear and instills a sense of triumph and hope,” she concluded.
New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale are released on Hulu every Tuesday, promising more intense struggles and character evolutions as the series draws to a close.
