Surge in Violence Against Female Streamers Raises Alarm

In March 2025, a disturbing trend emerged, showcasing an alarming increase in aggressive encounters directed at female live streamers by male viewers.

An incident on March 2 highlighted this issue when popular Twitch streamers Cinna, Emiru, and Valkyrae were live at California’s Santa Monica Pier. During their broadcast, a male admirer asked Emiru for her phone number.

Emiru appeared visibly uncomfortable and humorously remarked that she “didn’t have a phone.” However, moments later, the same individual lunged at the group, uttering threats of violence.

On the same evening, a shocking break-in occurred at the residence of renowned streamer Amouranth, where assailants reportedly physically assaulted her and demanded access to her cryptocurrency wallet worth $20 million.

I’m sharing the full security footage from the robbery.
I wish I didn’t have to prove that the worst night of my life was real. Too many people still think I made it up – I really wish it had been fake, or a prank.
It wasn’t.
I still have nightmares. I was terrified, even… pic.twitter.com/N5FNVX4tJn

Later in March, Emiru experienced another unsettling incident when a male viewer followed her to a restaurant where she was streaming with fellow creator ExtraEmily.

During the stream, Emiru addressed the viewer directly, indicating that his behavior was unacceptable and urged him to leave.

On March 13, another alarming event was reported by Fortnite streamer ‘Chica,’ who captured footage of hammer-wielding thieves attempting to break into her home. Fortunately, they were unable to steal any vehicles due to anti-theft mechanisms.

The most harrowing account was from Airi Sato, a streamer from Japan, who suffered multiple stab wounds while streaming live in Shinjuku on March 11. The assailant, Kenichi Takano, claimed to have attacked Sato over a financial dispute.

These harrowing incidents have led many female streamers to feel unsafe in public spaces, as the threat of aggression looms not just outside but even within their own homes.

While the online community reacted strongly to these distressing events, this is not an isolated phenomenon. Female influencers have faced stalking and harassment for years. A notable instance dates back to 2016 when singer Christina Grimmie was tragically shot by an obsessed fan at a meet-and-greet.

Psychologist Explores the Psychology Behind Online Stalking

Amidst this surge in attacks, the question arises: What factors contribute to this troubling trend? To explore this, we consulted clinical psychologist Dr. Carla Schuman.

Dr. Schuman suggested that the unique dynamic of social media may foster a sense of familiarity among viewers towards streamers, creating an illusion of access and intimacy that doesn’t exist in reality.

“Social media generates a false sense of familiarity that can lead to misguided feelings of intimacy,” she stated. “Platforms like Twitch encourage viewers to feel connected and knowledgeable about the streamer, which can warp perceptions of personal boundaries.”

As streamers engage with their audience for extended periods, viewers may develop what Dr. Schuman describes as ‘parasocial relationships,’ where an illusion of friendship is formed, misleadingly suggesting romantic or personal interest from the streamer.

She elaborated, “Some male viewers may mistakenly interpret a streamer’s friendliness as romantic interest, fueling their obsession and potentially leading to dangerous situations.”

Although it appears that stalking incidents are on the rise in digital spaces, Dr. Schuman asserts that this behavior has been present in various forms long before the advent of social media.

“Stalking has taken on new life in the streaming world but is not a new phenomenon,” she said. “The medium may have changed, but the underlying behavior remains the same.”

While there is currently no definitive solution to the issue of online stalking, Dr. Schuman advocates for better public understanding of the seriousness of these actions, emphasizing that live streaming remains a real interaction between individuals.

Increased education and awareness surrounding boundary issues could help mitigate risky behavior towards content creators.

The importance of preventing stalking is being recognized, highlighted by statements from law enforcement. FBI director Kash Patel recently underscored the importance of addressing swatting incidents that have endangered streamers and their families.

However, even those behind bars can continue to pose threats to their victims, as seen in the case of GTA streamer ‘Sodakite,’ who received alarming correspondence from a stalker already incarcerated for violent crimes.

Female streamers often express frustration over the inaction of law enforcement when confronting their stalkers. Sweet Anita, a UK streamer, highlighted this in a poignant tweet following severe threats against her:

“If anything happens to me, I really hope that I’m the last canary in the coal mine. The law needs to change. No job should have such a high risk of rape, assault or death, especially not livestreaming.”
