Bernhard Langer Nears Historic Milestone at Masters
At the Masters on Friday, Bernhard Langer found himself one stroke away from setting a new record. The 67-year-old golfer needed a par on the 18th hole at Augusta National to finish at 2-over, thereby securing a position below the projected cut line and potentially becoming the oldest player ever to make the cut in the tournament’s history.
Langer successfully landed his tee shot on the fairway of the par-4 18th hole. However, his approach shot faltered, rolling off the green and into a spectator area.
As he approached his ball, the crowd erupted in applause, honoring Langer, who proudly won the Masters in 1985 and 1993. He previously announced that this year would mark his last competitive appearance at Augusta.
After chipping his third shot just past the fringe of the green, Langer faced a lengthy putt for par. Despite his valiant effort, the ball rolled slightly past the hole, resulting in a missed opportunity to make the cut. He ultimately tapped in for a bogey and walked off the green to another round of applause, greeted by family and fellow Masters champions.
Langer reflected on his experience, expressing deep gratitude for the support he received throughout the tournament. “It’s been tremendous to be here 41 times,” he remarked to ESPN. The outpouring of love from fans and family was, in his words, “unbelievable.”
While Langer was in a solid position to make the cut earlier in the round, a double bogey on the 15th hole significantly damaged his chances. He described finishing the tournament poorly, indicating that his mistakes on both the 15th and the 18th holes were particularly disappointing.
Another veteran, Fred Couples, who holds the current record for being the oldest player to make the cut at Augusta, also had a chance to extend his own record but finished with a score of 4-over for the first two days.
Langer made his debut at the Masters in 1982, serving as Germany’s first-ever participant in this highly esteemed event.
