Osgood Perkins’s New Horror Film “The Monkey” Adapted from Stephen King
Following the triumph of his recent venture, “Longlegs,” writer-director Osgood Perkins is poised to launch another entry into the supernatural horror genre. Neon has just dropped a teaser trailer for “The Monkey,” setting the stage for its theatrical release in early 2025. The trailer showcases a blend of dark humor and unsettling imagery, including a striking scene featuring a burning baby carriage.
This film draws inspiration from a short story penned by Stephen King in 1980, which was part of his acclaimed collection titled “Skeleton Crew.” The narrative centers on twin brothers, Hal and Bill, who unearth an eerie monkey toy hidden in their attic. As they navigate the aftermath of the ensuing mysterious and violent occurrences, they decide to cast the toy aside. However, the passage of time strains their bond, and they are ultimately reunited when the monkey resurfaces in their lives. The younger versions of the brothers are portrayed by Christian Convery, known for his role in “Sweet Tooth,” while Emmy nominee Theo James, acclaimed for performances in “The White Lotus” and “The Gentlemen,” takes on the adult role. The film boasts a diverse ensemble cast, including Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany (“She-Hulk,” “Orphan Black”), Elijah Wood (“The Lord of The Rings”), Laura Mennell (“Batwoman”), Sarah Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Rohan Campbell (“The Hardy Boys”), Colin O’Brien (“Dear Edward”), and Corin Clark (“Upload”).
The production team behind this venture includes well-known horror producer James Wan, famed for “The Conjuring” series, along with notable figures such as Michael Clear, Dave Caplan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Chris Ferguson. “The Monkey” marks the second partnership between Perkins and Neon, following the success of “Longlegs,” which has emerged as Neon’s highest-grossing film to date, achieving over $100 million at the box office with a modest budget of under $10 million. The release of “The Monkey” is set to follow closely after “Longlegs,” which debuted in July of this year.
Should “The Monkey” resonate well with audiences, it could mark a significant achievement in the horror genre, potentially paralleling the impressive back-to-back releases seen with Ari Aster’s films “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” which were released a year apart in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on February 21, 2025.
