Today, the nominations for the 40th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced, an event which uniquely celebrates outstanding achievements in Off-Broadway theatre. The announcement was made by Francis Jue, who stars in Broadway’s Yellow Face, alongside Krysta Rodriguez from the current Broadway production of Smash. The awards ceremony is set to take place on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at NYU Skirball, starting at 7:00 PM. The event will be accessible to the public, with tickets available for purchase through the NYU Skirball website or at the box office, open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 PM. The Lortel Awards are presented by the Off-Broadway League and the Lucille Lortel Theatre, supported by TDF.
In a strong showing for musicals, both Drag: The Musical and Signature Theatre Company’s Three Houses garnered six nominations each, including Outstanding Musical. Additionally, Our Class similarly received six nominations, with a nod for Outstanding Revival. Other notable nominations include five each for Here There Are Blueberries from New York Theatre Workshop and Tectonic Theater Project, Liberation by Roundabout Theatre Company, and Sumo from Ma-Yi Theater Company and The Public Theater, all competing for Outstanding Play. Overall, the 2024-2025 Off-Broadway season featured 70 eligible productions, with 32 earning at least one nomination.
This year’s Lortel Awards will also honor several special recipients. Alice Childress will be inducted into the Playwrights’ Sidewalk, while New Federal Theatre will receive recognition for Outstanding Body of Work. Carol Fishman will be honored with the Edith Oliver Service to Off-Broadway award.
The organizing committee for the Lortel Awards, comprising members from the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, is responsible for the administration of the ceremony. Michael Heitzman, a distinguished writer and director, will serve as the director for the event. A diverse Voting Committee, including representatives from various theatre organizations and professionals in the field, contributes to the selection process.
