James-Christian B. Blockwood Appointed as New President and CEO of NAPA
The National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) has announced the selection of James-Christian B. Blockwood as its new president and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2025.
Blockwood previously held the position of executive vice president at the Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting effective government. His work there focused on the organization’s strategic direction and management. He will take over from Terry Gerton, who has served as president and CEO since 2017, marking a notable tenure as the longest-serving leader in the organization’s history.
Gerton, who made history as only the second woman to lead NAPA full-time, announced her intention to step down in March, with her official exit planned for 2025.
Janet A. Weiss, chair of the Academy’s board, highlighted the qualities sought in Gerton’s successor, stating, “In our search for our next president and CEO, the board of the Academy was looking for a combination of broad and deep experience in public administration, outstanding leadership skills and a demonstrated commitment to the Academy’s unique role and mission.” She expressed confidence that Blockwood will continue to enhance the Academy’s legacy, reputation, and future potential.
In addition to his role at the Partnership for Public Service, Blockwood brings a wealth of experience from positions within the Government Accountability Office and the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
Blockwood is recognized as a fellow of the Academy, which comprises approximately 1,000 professionals from government, academia, and the private sector who provide invaluable insights to lawmakers and organizational leaders on matters of public administration.
Reflecting on his new position, Blockwood stated, “It was an honor to be elected a fellow of the Academy nearly ten years ago, and now a privilege to have the confidence of the board of directors to lead the Academy into its next era — especially with the Academy’s 60th and our nation’s 250th anniversaries as milestones ahead. I am proud to have the opportunity to work with our extraordinary fellows and the entire Academy staff.”
Founded by Congress in 1967, NAPA was established to offer nonpartisan guidance to the legislative branch and various government entities at local, state, and international levels.
