Diana, Princess of Wales, Was Disguised as Freddie Mercury’s Boyfriend by Late Comedian Kenny Everett to Visit a London Pub
Diana, Princess of Wales, had an unforgettable experience at a pub in London.
In a fascinating twist of royal escapism, Diana, Princess of Wales, managed to visit a London pub while disguised as Freddie Mercury’s boyfriend, thanks to the late comedian Kenny Everett.
At the time, Diana was 36 years old and had developed a friendship with Everett, who had a penchant for incorporating fun into outrageous antics. After having lunch with Everett and his comedy partner, Cleo Rocos, the group decided to unwind by watching the American sitcom ‘Golden Girls’.
As they prepared for a night out, Kenny reached out to his friend Freddie Mercury. Rocos, taking the playful disguise seriously, donned her brother’s camouflaged jacket and, with a little help from Mercury, transformed Diana’s appearance with sunglasses that ensured her anonymity.
Rocos recounted the event in an interview with the Daily Mirror, saying: “Diana was curious about our plans and what we were wearing.”
She elaborated on the camouflaged jacket being a gift from her brother, a war photographer. “It suited her perfectly, and with Kenny’s leather cap and Freddie’s aviator sunglasses, she was ready to blend in,” Rocos noted.
Diana insisted, “I want to come too,” a comment that initially amused her friends. They thought she was joking.
Kenny humorously remarked, “We are going to a place where there are big hairy men, and they fight,” imagining potential headlines like “Future Queen of England Dies in Gay Bar Brawl.”
Despite his concerns, Mercury encouraged them to let Diana enjoy the night out, expressing, “Oh, let the girl have some fun.”
They arrived at the Vauxhall Tavern, where Diana successfully passed as Mercury’s boyfriend, resembling a male model, and she relished the experience.
The outing lasted approximately 20 minutes before the group caught a cab to return Diana to Kensington Palace, where she lived.
Reflecting on the event, Rocos said, “It was about 20 minutes of sheer fun before we called a cab to take her home.”
She added, “I can vividly recall that lunch, especially Diana’s infectious laughter.”
Kenny Everett passed away from complications related to AIDS on April 4, 1995, at the age of 50. Cleo Rocos fondly reminisced about the joy and spontaneity he brought to their gatherings.
“We would often attend parties and engage in playful antics, swinging from chandeliers and making memories,” Rocos shared.
She humorously added, “And if a party became dull, we would snag some Champagne and make a daring exit through the window with it.”
