During a recent episode of the “Soul Boom” podcast, actor Rainn Wilson engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue with MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle, who had attributed the growing distrust in the media to both President Donald Trump’s election and the influence of Elon Musk’s vast media presence.

Ruhle expressed that the aftermath of Trump’s victory left many people shocked and frustrated, which contributed to a withdrawal from traditional media. She also pointed to Musk’s “media machine” as a driving force in this shift, suggesting that his platform often promotes misinformation and encourages users to abandon more established news outlets.

“Our focus must be on the current landscape in America,” Ruhle noted, emphasizing the need to report on the challenges Democrats face in regaining their footing and the actions of the Biden administration.

However, Wilson challenged the notion that the media adequately addresses the current administration’s shortcomings, particularly when it comes to immigration policy and other pressing issues.

During the podcast released on April 17, Wilson asserted that there appears to be a disparity in the media’s scrutiny between the Biden and Trump administrations. He criticized left-leaning media for their complacency during Trump’s presidency, remarking that they often downplayed serious concerns, describing their mindset as being in “denial.”

“It feels like there was a lack of passion directed towards the previous administration,” Wilson remarked. He emphasized that many left-leaning news outlets treated pressing issues such as the economy and immigration with a dismissive attitude during Trump’s presidency.

In response, Ruhle defended the media’s coverage, stating that discussions regarding immigration policies and criticisms of the Biden administration have been persistent. She cited specific examples, such as when Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis strategically utilized migrant transportation as a political maneuver, which gained significant media attention. Ruhle insisted that the media has consistently highlighted Biden’s slow responses to immigration challenges during his tenure.

Ruhle further elaborated on her interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, addressing immigration concerns. She recalled Harris attributing part of the immigration issue to obstruction by Trump, indicating that while her statement held some truth, it did not fully address the frustrations felt by citizens. Ruhle raised the question of Harris’ effectiveness in addressing her designated border responsibilities since 2021, suggesting that more accountability is needed.

“What has been the Vice President’s role in managing these migration issues?” Ruhle inquired, drawing attention to the lack of visible action in addressing the crisis.

Furthermore, Ruhle pointed out that Republicans have successfully tackled uncomfortable topics regarding public sentiment, which, albeit controversial, resonates with some constituents. She remarked that such discussions often lead to accusations of racism or xenophobia.
