The latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, Season 6 Episode 4, marks the introduction of Timothy Simons’ character. Despite his status as a High Commander, there is a compelling reason to regard him as less of a threat—another newcomer poses a more significant danger.
In this pivotal final season, the paths of Serena and June starkly diverge following their separation in the first episode.
Serena’s trajectory takes her to New Bethlehem, a region intent on modernizing its relationship with Gilead, while June returns to the resistance group Mayday, determined to dismantle her oppressors for good.
In this episode, Serena collaborates with Joseph Lawrence, who is inaugurated as a High Commander during a ceremony where he meets Simons’ character for the first time.
Don’t be overly concerned about Timothy Simons’ character in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6
Known for his roles in Veep and Nobody Wants This, Simons plays a fellow High Commander with a nefarious agenda. He persuades Lawrence to join him at Jezebels under the guise of a celebration, where he inflicts humiliation and harm on Janine.
While he certainly poses a danger to the women around him, his long-term impact on the plans of Mayday appears limited.
Even in his brief introduction on-screen, Simons’ character exhibits traits of arrogance and shortsightedness, qualities that, in storytelling, often lead to a character’s downfall.
His contemptible ideals have already garnered him numerous enemies, including the women at Jezebels and other High Commanders like Lawrence.
Timing is also crucial; his introduction at this stage of the season suggests that he may not survive for long.
Furthermore, June, Moira, and Luke have discovered Mayday’s strategy to target the most extreme Commanders through infiltrations at Jezebels, a locale that Simons’ character seems to frequent.
It seems clear that his time may be running out, albeit unbeknownst to him.
Be cautious of High Commander Wharton
Conversely, High Commander Wharton, Rose’s father and another new character in Season 6, presents a more pressing concern.
Initially, he appears diplomatic and family-oriented, perhaps even amiable, yet there is more beneath the surface.
Currently, he has been a formidable presence for Nick in New Bethlehem, observing him closely. As a founding member of the Sons of Jacob, he clings firmly to entrenched fundamentalist beliefs and seems wary of progressive changes.
Nevertheless, he has shown support for Serena’s autonomy, noting that a “better man” would have enhanced her influence.
Unlike Simons’ character, who is brash and reckless, Wharton is characterized by his quiet intelligence and calculated demeanor. Should his relationship with Serena deepen, they may form a potent alliance threatening the Mayday resistance.
