The Rising Appeal of the Peloponnese for Retirement in 2025

The Peloponnese region in Greece has been identified as one of six emerging retirement hotspots to watch in 2025, according to International Living. This area is celebrated for its rich historical heritage, stunning sun-soaked shores, and numerous Blue Flag Beaches, all conveniently located just a two-hour drive from Athens. Expats are drawn to the region’s affordability, with living costs falling under $2,500 per month, depending on individual lifestyle choices, and monthly rents dropping to as low as $320 in smaller communities.

If you’re contemplating retirement abroad, it’s worth exploring destinations that might not currently be on your radar.

In late 2024, International Living shared its annual selection of the six up-and-coming retirement regions to watch in 2025. This list was compiled through insights from an extensive network of contributors who identified hidden gems poised to gain international attention in the coming years. These sought-after locations offer vibrant communities, pleasant climates, and exceptional value, making them truly appealing for prospective retirees.

Among those featured on the list is the captivating Peloponnese region.

Situated at the southern tip of Greece’s mainland, the Peloponnese seamlessly blends coastal beauty with urban sophistication. Its proximity to Athens facilitates easy access to the capital while providing a myriad of Mediterranean beaches for relaxation and exploration.

“Encompassing roughly 8,320 square miles—slightly less than the state of Massachusetts—the Peloponnese is compartmentalized into seven notable regions: Achaia (north), Corinthia (northeast), Argolis (east), Arcadia (center), Laconia (southeast), Messenia (southwest), and Elis (west),” explained Lynn Roulo, a contributor to International Living. “The region is especially renowned for its ‘three legs’ or peninsulas, each showcasing unique landscapes and attributes.”

The Peloponnese is home to numerous iconic ancient landmarks, including Epidaurus and Mycenae, nestled among charming villages and scenic beaches, such as the upscale Costa Navarino beach community. While it retains its rugged allure, this destination is undeniably on an upward trajectory.

What factors contribute to the Peloponnese emerging as a top retirement choice? The cost of living stands out as significantly lower compared to many other European nations. As noted by International Living, retirees in this area can comfortably live on less than $2,500 monthly. For instance, in Kalamata, the region’s second-largest city, a 750-square-foot rental apartment could cost as little as $530. In more rural settings, monthly rents might be even more economical, with prices starting around $320.

Another major draw of the region is its impressive coastline, which spans over 1,200 miles and features numerous Blue Flag beaches recognized for their commitment to sustainability.

“Even though it’s not an island, the Peloponnese’s enchanting beaches and seaside towns rival those found in Greece’s most popular island getaways,” added International Living.

Other notable regions included in International Living’s up-and-coming retirement list are the Azuero Peninsula in Panama, the southern coast of Spain, Montenegro, Northern Portugal, and the southern part of Costa Rica.
