On April 2, the beloved comedy The Play That Goes Wrong celebrates its eighth anniversary since its grand opening in New York City. This popular production continues to captivate audiences off-Broadway at New World Stages.
The current cast of The Play That Goes Wrong features a talented ensemble, including Trevor Braun as Dennis, Ashley N. Hildreth as Annie, Julian Robertson as Trevor, Chris Lanceley as Chris, Adam Petherbridge as Max, and Chris French as Jonathan. Additional roles include Brent Bateman as Robert and Maggie Weston as Sandra, with understudies Damien Brett, Laura D’Andre, Brandon Haagenson, and Jemma Jane ready to step in as needed.
Directed by Matt DiCarlo, The Play That Goes Wrong premiered at New World Stages – Stage 4 on February 20, 2019. The design team includes Tony Award-winning set designer Nigel Hook, costume designer Roberto Surace, lighting designer Jeremy Cunningham, and sound designer Beth Lake. The original Broadway staging was directed by Mark Bell, with lighting by Ric Mountjoy and sound by Andrew Johnson.
The comedy, co-created by Mischief Theatre members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, presents a hilarious depiction of a beleaguered college theater group—the Cornley University Drama Society—attempting to produce a 1920s murder mystery. As the narrative progresses, the title’s promise proves true: everything that can go wrong, does, as the well-meaning actors struggle to keep the performance on track regardless of the chaos surrounding them.
The Broadway version of The Play That Goes Wrong debuted its performances on March 9, 2017, had its official opening on April 2 the same year, and concluded its Broadway run on January 6, 2019, at The Lyceum Theatre. During its time on Broadway, the play was recognized with several accolades, including the 2017 Tony Award for Best Set Design, a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award for Best Play, and the Theater Fans Choice Award for Best Play.
