Actors Reflect on Fan Theories for “The Rings of Power”
As the expansive universe of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” continues to capture the imagination of audiences worldwide, the cast of “The Rings of Power” experiences an intricate dance with fandom. Their interactions with fans’ theories can yield both encouragement and challenges.
Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who embodies Queen Regent Míriel, finds the analytical approach of fans to be an engaging aspect of her role. In a conversation with Us Weekly, she remarked on the creativity and thoughtfulness displayed by fans as they piece together the show’s narrative puzzles. “They really are so thoughtful about how they arrive at these theories and conclusions,” she stated.
However, she also conveyed a cautionary note regarding the potential pitfalls of allowing fan theories to impact her portrayal. “I feel like everybody would agree that you don’t want it to necessarily inform what you’re doing,” Addai-Robinson explained during an interview with TheWrap at San Diego Comic-Con. “You almost have to really tune out and be protective of yourself and your character,” she added, emphasizing the personal ownership that actors feel over their interpretations of the roles they play.
Morfydd Clark, who portrays Galadriel, shares her perspective on fan interactions. Prior to filming the first season, she utilized social media as a resource, learning from Tolkien aficionados who share insights and knowledge. “I think I did learn a lot from lots of, kind of Tolkien experts on Twitter and TikTok,” she acknowledged. Clark appreciates the community’s willingness to share information, which has enriched her understanding of the lore surrounding her character.
Ismael Cruz Córdova, known for his role as Arondir—an original character for the series—echoes Clark’s sentiments. Since his character lacks a historical context in Tolkien’s canon, fan creativity has played a pivotal role in his development. “Tolkien is dense,” he remarked, noting how discussions and theories have helped him construct a personal backstory that enhances his portrayal. “It’s given me a backstory that doesn’t exist in the books,” he explained.
Daniel Weyman, who plays the enigmatic Stranger, described the duality of engaging with fan theories. He finds value in external insights during character preparation but recognizes the need for personal focus during production. “That level of research – I could sort of do search for as long as it takes,” Weyman shared, noting the benefit of gathering diverse interpretations to form character foundations.
Yet, as filming progresses, Weyman aligns with Addai-Robinson’s concerns about external influences. He recounted an experience from a theater production where he overly relied on external feedback, resulting in confusion about his character’s direction. “There’s so much in the scene…that’s the stuff that I like to get involved with,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of trusting the core material and one’s own instincts.
“Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set to resume its journey with season two on Prime Video, debuting August 29.
