Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon: A Celebration of Reading
This weekend marks the much-anticipated Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon, an event that has been bringing book lovers together since its inception in 2007. I have been participating every April and October for over a decade, seizing the opportunity to dedicate an entire day to the joy of reading. These days, I share this experience with a couple of friends, creating a cozy atmosphere filled with snacks and stories that lasts throughout the day and often into the night.
Throughout my years of participating, I’ve come to understand a few key elements of a successful readathon. For starters, I’ve realized that staying awake for the entire 24 hours is no longer feasible for me; age comes with its limits. Additionally, I continue to refine my snack selection to ensure it perfectly complements my reading experience. Just as crucial as the snacks, however, is the choice of books. Traditionally, my readathon selections lean heavily towards graphic novels and novellas, but I’ve also developed insights on how to curate the perfect reading list, with an emphasis on queer literature, which I regularly read throughout the year.
Curating the Ideal Reading List
Below, I’ve highlighted some of my favorite and least favorable queer book choices for this marathon of reading. Each brings a unique flavor to the experience, influencing both the pace and enjoyment of the reading day.
Top Picks for Readathon Reading
- Graphic Novels: These visually engaging stories often provide a quick reading experience while still being impactful.
- Novellas: Their shorter length is perfect for a readathon, allowing for multiple completions in one day.
Books to Avoid
- Intense Literary Works: While valuable, dense narratives can slow down the pacing of a readathon.
- Long Epic Novels: These can become overwhelming, making it harder to maintain momentum throughout the day.
