Kathryn Hahn Caught Off Guard by Golden Globe Nomination for ‘Agatha All Along’

The announcement of award nominations often has stars on high alert, but not Kathryn Hahn. The actress was surprised to learn about her nomination for a Golden Globe for her role in Agatha All Along.

“I had no idea that they were being announced,” Hahn shared in an interview with Gold Derby. “I just was blissfully not looking up times. I woke up to a bunch of texts, but I had a gyno appointment, and it wasn’t until I was in the car on the way that it started to all click into place.” She added, “I was running so late to this gyno but I had to pull over because I was flipping out. I really was taken aback and just so emotional that it was for this particular part in this particular show. I’m taking the win of just that.”

Agatha All Along, a spin-off from the popular series WandaVision (2021), features Hahn reprising her role as an ancient, witty witch. The series, created by Jac Schaeffer, also features a cast that includes Joe Locke, Aubrey Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Debra Jo Rupp, and Patti LuPone.

Hahn humorously noted her lack of accolades in her career, recalling that her only past award was a second-place ribbon for a childhood crayon drawing. “I try to just find the gratitude of being in those kind of rooms,” she reflected. “Most of my life as an actor was watching these amazing shows at home, getting in pajamas with some candy, and maybe a little stoned, since it was back in the day. But then to be here now, it’s like, pinch me. I love my job so much and I can’t believe I get to do it for a living.”

As the Golden Globes ceremony scheduled for January 5 approaches, Hahn faces a tight schedule, returning from a trip to Machu Picchu. “I’m literally getting back and then basically scrubbing my fingernails and getting ready,” she disclosed. She expressed enthusiasm about reconnecting with her fellow nominees, especially Disclaimer star Cate Blanchett, and the other women in her category. “I can’t wait to see all of them and just get a lot of photographs and squeeze so many people.”

Hahn also addressed how the infectious tune “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road,” penned by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, tends to linger in her mind. “Yes!” she exclaimed, acknowledging her fondness for karaoke. “We would be on set and Aubrey would just be humming it. It was so baked into the DNA of this show from the beginning. And then to hear the way that the Lopezes reincarnated it for different purposes, like the Tom Waits-y version, it was pretty amazing. But yeah, none of us could get it out of our heads.”

Working alongside LuPone was a significant highlight for Hahn, who described her as “the most hilarious, earthy, grounded, fantastic woman.” She remarked on the rapport shared among the cast, stating, “We got along. I’m so in love with every single person in that cast. We spent a lot of time together, and thank God it was such a sweet, talented group of humans. I just felt like every day I came to play with these people that were also there to play.”

Agatha All Along is noted as one of Marvel’s most inclusive projects, reflecting a diverse range of characters and themes. Hahn emphasized, “What I love about it, and what I think is the genius of Jac Schaeffer, is that it’s just what the show is. That’s baked into the show, so it doesn’t feel at all like it’s just slapped on top of something else.” She expressed gratitude towards Marvel for their supportive approach, adding, “It’s very queer. And also, women over 40! There’s so many things about it that just feel very new and fresh in this genre.”

The series has generated buzz, particularly with the viral moments showcasing witches with exaggerated prosthetic features. “Sometimes I felt like my real face and that face looked so similar,” Hahn joked about the challenges of differentiating between her real appearance and the prosthetics.

With the submission of Agatha All Along in the comedy/musical categories for the Golden Globes, speculation about a possible second season emerged. While Hahn is uncertain about future developments, she stated her willingness to return as Agatha, describing the character as very dear to her. “I was surprised when I read that it was submitted in comedy. It certainly kind of pricked all of our ears up. But Marvel doesn’t say anything, so we kind of have to just surrender.”

Hahn reminisced fondly about her childhood second-place ribbon. “I was so happy to get second. My mom hung up my second-place ribbon for so long. And you know what? That kept me humble, from the beginning.”

All episodes of Agatha All Along and WandaVision are available for streaming on Disney+.
