Introducing the MDLondon Curl: A Revolutionary Curling Wand
The MDLondon Curl offers a refreshing take on traditional curling wands. Unlike typical styling tools seen on dressing tables, its right-angled design resembles something you might find in a toolbox, aiming to provide a more ergonomically friendly experience. This unique shape is purportedly designed for enhanced comfort, enabling greater control during hairstyling and minimizing discomfort during use. However, the available demonstration video primarily features someone styling another person’s hair, leaving some uncertainty about its usability for self-styling.
The body of the curling wand is reminiscent of many modern hair dryers, but with a crucial distinction—it does not blow air. Instead, the ceramic barrels heat up to effectively set hair, operating similarly to a conventional curling iron.
One of the standout features is the ability to swap out the curl barrels to achieve various hairstyles. The MDLondon Curl includes four interchangeable barrel types: a standard 25mm barrel for classic curls, a larger 31mm barrel for voluminous waves, a slender 10mm barrel for tight, defined corkscrew curls, and a reverse conical barrel designed to create relaxed, beach-inspired waves.
Despite my hesitations regarding the right-angled design, I find the modularity of the barrels to be a compelling advantage. The hair styling market is saturated with multi-functional tools, and having a device that accommodates various styling preferences without needing a separate unit for each look is a practical solution. As tiny curling wands gain popularity for occasional use, offering those styles alongside more relaxed options can alleviate the need for additional purchases.
Previously, MDLondon has impressed with its hair care devices; for instance, the MDLondon Strait is featured in a roundup of the best hair straighteners, and the MDLondon Blow hair dryer has been praised for its trifecta of being lightweight, luxurious, and powerful. While both of these tools sport unique design elements, neither quite matches the eye-catching innovation of the Curl. It will be interesting to see how the Curl performs in real-world scenarios and whether it encourages other brands to innovate similarly.
Heat vs. Air: Examining Styling Techniques
The release of a traditional heated tong, albeit with a contemporary spin, is somewhat unexpected in today’s market, which is largely dominated by tools that use directed air to style hair, such as the Dyson Airwrap. This approach is often perceived as healthier for hair, as it minimizes exposure to extreme heat.
While I appreciate this innovative method—having recently reviewed the Dyson Airwrap i.d. and been quite impressed—there are certain limitations. Curls made with air techniques may not hold as long as those styled with heat, the process can be time-consuming, especially if you’re following best practices by applying a cold shot to set each curl, and it can be tricky to master. Ensuring that hair correctly wraps around the barrel requires precision, or you risk incorporating unintended strands from other curls. Thus, the reimagined traditional tong like the MDLondon Curl might just be the solution that many have been looking for.
The MDLondon Curl is currently available solely in the UK, retailing at £129, roughly translating to $168 or AU$270.
