When the term “cruise” crosses my mind, I envision towering vessels filled to the brim with passengers, offering an array of attractions that can be quite overwhelming. These modern marvels feature everything from restaurants and water slides to live performances and gaming rooms, resembling massive, floating amusement parks.
While I understand their allure—particularly for families and travelers looking to accommodate diverse interests—I have never found large cruises to align with my personal travel preferences. However, my perception shifted dramatically after experiencing my first expedition cruise earlier this year.
I had the opportunity to sail with the luxury cruise company Swan Hellenic, embarking on a 10-night journey from Costa Rica to Colombia, traversing the iconic Panama Canal. This adventure profoundly transformed my view of cruising as a viable means of travel. Here’s what I discovered throughout this unique experience.
The advantages of smaller vessels
The SH Diana, the latest addition to Swan Hellenic’s fleet, is their largest expedition ship, measuring 410 feet in length. It accommodates a maximum of 192 guests along with 127 crew members, creating an intimate atmosphere with approximately 110 guests on board during my cruise. The ship featured a variety of upscale amenities, including a pool, spa, fitness center, and multiple dining options.
The philosophy of “less is more” vividly resonated throughout my time on the SH Diana. The ship’s dining setup included one main restaurant with a fine-dining ambiance, while two other casual venues provided relaxed alternatives. The social hub of the ship, the Observation Lounge, featured the only bar, fostering a welcoming environment for guests to mingle. Amenities like a library, an expedition lab, and a stargazing deck were present, but the absence of water slides and nightclubs was refreshing.
While some may find the limited choices disappointing, I appreciated the lack of overwhelming options. This allowed me to unwind and enjoy the cruise without the stress of planning every detail of my on-board experience. My most significant decisions typically revolved around selecting dinner entrees or finding the perfect spot to enjoy the breathtaking ocean views. Meals were varied and creatively designed, ensuring that monotony was never a concern.
The small size of SH Diana facilitated a more personalized experience. Navigation around the ship was effortless, fostering a sense of familiarity as crew and guests quickly learned each other’s names. This intimate setting encouraged social interactions, allowing new friendships to form among passengers who started as strangers.
Exploration beyond the mainstream
Swan Hellenic’s motto, “see what others don’t,” was evident throughout my journey. Unlike larger vessels constrained to major ports, SH Diana could access lesser-known gems. Although we visited famous locales like Panama City and Cartagena, much of our itinerary ventured into off-the-beaten-path territories.
We navigated along Costa Rica’s stunning Pacific coast, pausing to explore pristine national parks and wildlife reserves. Our travels took us to Cebaco Island and the San Blas Archipelago in Panama—both idyllic, secluded spots. Additionally, we ventured into the remote Darien Jungle, an area reachable only by boat.
The allure of daily excursions
Participating in an expedition cruise demands a spirit of adventure, and this was a highlight of the Swan Hellenic journey. Daily excursions were central to our experience, organized by a dedicated expedition team that facilitated onshore activities ranging from city tours to hikes in nature.
Each destination we visited offered a corresponding excursion available to all guests, allowing us to engage with the local environment. While premium activities, such as cooking classes and helicopter rides, were available for an additional fee, most participants opted for the complimentary explorations.
The structure of our days contributed to the sense of adventure. Evenings typically included briefings by the expedition team, detailing the following day’s schedule and recommendations on what to bring. Recaps of our daily discoveries, often accompanied by captivating photographs, enriched our understanding of the regions we explored.
Mornings began with breakfast followed by excursions accessed via Zodiacs, during which we snorkeled, trekked through rainforests, and enjoyed serene beaches. Encounters with wildlife and interactions with local communities were integral to our adventures. Though participation in excursions was encouraged, many guests, including myself, opted to relax and savor the cruise experience.
A balance of adventure and luxury
Adventuring on a luxury cruise in Central America may not seem arduous, but it certainly had its challenges. Riding Zodiacs amid waves or trekking over rocky terrain to find secluded beaches could be quite demanding, particularly with the heat and humidity that defined regions like Panama City and Cartagena.
However, this juxtaposition of adventurous excursions with the luxurious amenities on board created a delightful contrast. Returning to the ship after a sweaty exploration to rejuvenate in my spacious cabin’s rainfall shower and enjoy a sophisticated four-course meal was a highlight of the trip.
The exceptional crew enhanced the experience
No discussion of the experience aboard SH Diana would be complete without acknowledging the exceptional crew. From the captain to the expedition staff and dining team, every individual surpassed expectations. Their friendliness and attentiveness created an atmosphere that was both professional and welcoming. My butler, in particular, catered to my every need and ensured my accommodations were impeccable. As our voyage concluded, I felt a genuine sadness in bidding farewell to those who made this experience so memorable.
Overall, embarking on an expedition cruise was an enlightening journey, even for someone like me with considerable travel experience. Discovering a style of cruising that emphasizes education and experiential learning over mere entertainment opened my eyes to the possibilities of cruising. I may very well become an avid cruiser in the future.
