Fostering Resilience in Children: The Case for Independent Problem-Solving
In the journey of parenting, one crucial lesson is the importance of allowing children to grapple with challenges on their own. This perspective was shared by psychiatrist and bestselling author Daniel Amen during a recent episode of the “Built Different” podcast.
Amen emphasized that parents often go too far in shielding their children from difficulties, which can lead to the development of “mentally weak children.” He pointed out common behaviors, such as taking over a child’s school project or conceding to their demands to avoid conflict, as detrimental to the development of independence and resilience. Research suggests that children who cultivate resilience are more likely to thrive and find happiness as adults.
His approach advocates for natural consequences: “When my daughter forgot her homework, no one was bringing it to school for her. If she left her jacket behind on a cold day despite being reminded, it stayed home,” Amen explained. He believes that when a child expresses boredom, instead of providing an instant solution, parents should encourage them to think critically about how to respond: “I wonder what you’re going to do about it.”
He further stated, “Overmanaging your children’s lives can bolster your self-esteem at the cost of theirs. Mental toughness is forged through overcoming obstacles.”
Moreover, building resilience isn’t synonymous with adopting a “tough love” approach marked by strict discipline, according to Tovah Klein, a child psychologist at Barnard College. Klein highlighted that trying to prevent children from facing disappointments is counterproductive to building resilience. Instead, offering a nurturing presence during challenging times can significantly benefit a child’s emotional growth.
Klein suggested a more empathetic strategy: “It’s essential to convey that while difficulties may arise, your support is unwavering. It communicates trust in their ability to navigate challenges, regardless of the outcome.”
Encouraging children to take on responsibilities, from household chores to helping peers, is another effective strategy to impart a sense of empowerment, as noted by the American Psychological Association in a 2012 blog post. Such involvement can help children develop the confidence needed to face their own challenges competently.
“Allowing children to experiment with finding their own solutions is vital,” Amen advised. “Minimize your involvement, so they can learn to resolve their issues independently.”
