New Orleans Tops Walkability Rankings in the U.S.
Among American cities, many are not particularly known for being pedestrian-friendly. However, a recent analysis by travel insurance specialists AllClear has identified one Southern city that stands out: New Orleans. This evaluation involved examining the geographic characteristics of over 240 global cities, focusing on aspects like elevation and terrain. Ultimately, New Orleans emerged as the most walkable city in the United States and the fourth worldwide.
The design of New Orleans’ vibrant French Quarter and Central Business District dates back to 1721, conceived by French military engineer Le Blond de la Tour. These areas span two miles and host an impressive collection of more than 500 dining options along with nearly 100 attractions. Noteworthy sites include the iconic St. Louis Cathedral, the historic Jackson Square, and the lively Bourbon Street, famously associated with the Mardi Gras celebrations.
New Orleans is renowned for its culinary scene, making it a prime destination for food lovers. Visitors can enjoy delectable beignets from Café du Monde, relish the hearty meals at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant located in the culturally rich Tremé neighborhood, and explore an array of local favorites, from crawfish étouffée to decadent bread pudding and po’ boys. The city offers a wealth of options for those eager to indulge in its famous cuisine.
Exploring New Orleans on foot reveals much of the city’s charm, but taking a ride on one of its renowned streetcars adds to the experience. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority runs five different streetcar routes, allowing travelers to soak in the city’s atmosphere at a leisurely pace. For visitors seeking luxurious accommodations with easy streetcar access and proximity to the French Quarter, options include the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, and the Four Seasons New Orleans. For an authentic Bourbon Street experience, visitors may choose to stay at the Royal Sonesta French Quarter.
New Orleans isn’t alone in gaining recognition from AllClear for its walkable nature. Other American cities making the list include Miami, Sacramento, and Tampa, which all secured spots among the top 20 worldwide. In South America, Buenos Aires was the only city to appear, ranking 15th.
